4 Overview of WML Files

4.5 Overview of character rules

When you convert a FrameMaker document to HTML, you want to specify how the characters with each character tag in your FrameMaker document should appear when converted to HTML. To do this, you need to have a character rule with the same name as the character tags in your FrameMaker document. Each character rule is mapped to an HTML character highlight name.

You can see the character rules that are defined in a WML file by selecting the Character Rules view in the main window. For example:

Figure 4.1 Character rules in main window

Figure 4.1 shows four character rules. Each character rule appears as a character tag name followed by an HTML highlight name. In the first character rule, Code-example is a the name of a character rule (and also a character tag in the Frame document), and Code is the HTML highlight used to represent characters having the tag Code-example.

In the second character rule, the character tag is named Italic and the HTML highlight name is the same, Italic. The mapping rule is still needed, even though the character tag has the same name as a HTML highlight.

In the third character rule, the character tag is named Emphasize (U.S. spelling), and the HTML highlight is named Emphasise (British spelling).

You can view the WML statement for a character rule by selecting a character rule in the main window. The details window shows the WML statement, such as:

CHARACTER { TAG "Output" MAP Teletype }
In the details window you can specify another mapping. The complete list of HTML highlights is:

Bold, Cite, Code, Definition, Emphasise, Italic, Keyboard, Sample, Strong, Teletype, Underline, Variable
